Role and Responsibilities in Context
The Technical Operations Manager at Veja Mate operates at the intersection of engineering, asset management, and field coordination. While the offshore wind farm benefits from advanced automation and remote monitoring, the role ensures that technical systems—from turbine control software to high-voltage infrastructure—remain aligned with operational targets. This position is not purely office-based; it bridges the gap between onshore planning and offshore execution, requiring a deep understanding of both domains.
Day-to-day work involves close collaboration with the Offshore Site Manager, the SCADA and IT teams, and external service providers. The manager prioritizes work orders, reviews technical reports, and supports the resolution of complex faults. They also contribute to the continuous improvement of maintenance strategies, often using data-driven insights to refine preventive and condition-based maintenance plans.
Because Veja Mate operates in a challenging marine environment, the Technical Operations Manager must be prepared for occasional offshore visits. These visits may include inspections, audits, or hands-on support during critical repair campaigns. The role therefore requires a combination of analytical rigor and practical adaptability.
Technical Scope and Asset Ownership
The wind farm comprises 80 Siemens SWT-6.0-154 turbines, an offshore substation, inter-array cables, and an export cable connection to the onshore grid. The Technical Operations Manager may be assigned ownership of specific asset groups, such as the turbine electrical systems, the SCADA network, or the substation auxiliary systems. This ownership includes:
- Monitoring asset performance and reliability metrics
- Leading root cause analyses for major component failures
- Coordinating with OEMs and specialist contractors for technical support
- Ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
- Managing technical documentation and as-built records
For example, in the case of a recurring converter fault, the Technical Operations Manager would work with the turbine manufacturer to identify the failure pattern, implement a retrofit or software update, and validate the solution through field trials. This requires both technical depth and project management skills.
Process Optimization and Continuous Improvement
A core expectation of the role is to drive efficiency across operational workflows. Veja Mate operates with a lean team, so even small improvements can have a significant impact on availability and cost. The Technical Operations Manager leads or supports initiatives such as:
- Streamlining the handover process between onshore planning and offshore execution teams
- Enhancing the use of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) for work order tracking
- Automating routine reporting and KPI dashboards
- Reducing vessel downtime through better coordination of spare parts and tools
- Implementing lessons learned from previous campaigns into standard operating procedures
These projects often involve cross-functional teams, including technicians, planners, and HSE advisors. The Technical Operations Manager facilitates workshops, gathers feedback, and ensures that changes are sustainable and well-documented.
Collaboration and Communication
Effective communication is vital in this role. The Technical Operations Manager acts as a technical translator between different stakeholders: engineers, technicians, management, and external partners. They prepare clear reports and presentations for management reviews, and they ensure that technical decisions are understood and accepted by the operational teams.
Regular meetings with the Offshore Site Manager help align priorities and resolve conflicts. The manager also participates in weekly planning meetings, where upcoming maintenance windows are discussed in light of weather forecasts, vessel availability, and spare part logistics.
Because Veja Mate values a flat hierarchy, the Technical Operations Manager is expected to voice concerns and propose improvements directly to senior leadership. This open culture fosters innovation and quick decision-making.
Career Development and Training
Veja Mate is committed to the professional growth of its employees. The Technical Operations Manager has access to a range of training opportunities, including advanced technical courses, leadership development programs, and industry conferences. The company supports certifications relevant to offshore wind, such as GWO (Global Wind Organisation) training, high-voltage switching authorization, and project management credentials.
Over time, the role can evolve into broader asset management or operations leadership positions. Some Technical Operations Managers have transitioned into roles such as Senior Asset Manager, Operations Director, or technical specialist within the wider offshore wind industry.
Mentoring is also encouraged. Experienced managers often guide junior engineers and interns, sharing practical knowledge about wind farm operations and fostering the next generation of offshore wind professionals.
Work Environment and Safety Culture
Safety is the top priority at Veja Mate. The Technical Operations Manager plays a key role in promoting a strong safety culture, both onshore and offshore. They participate in safety walks, incident investigations, and risk assessments. They ensure that all technical work is planned and executed in accordance with HSE regulations and company procedures.
The onshore office is located in Hamburg, offering a modern and collaborative workspace. The offshore environment, when visited, requires adherence to strict safety protocols, including survival training and medical fitness. The company provides all necessary personal protective equipment and ensures that employees are well-prepared for offshore assignments.
Despite the demanding nature of the industry, Veja Mate emphasizes work-life balance. Flexible working hours and the possibility of remote work for certain tasks help employees manage their personal and professional commitments.
